Checking a specific Mac?

Each model line has its own page: where the serial sits on that chassis, every Apple Silicon model identifier, and what sellers are asking right now.

No serial yet?

Find the serial on any Mac.

  1. 1

    Open About This Mac

On a Mac that boots, choose Apple menu → About This Mac. The serial number is listed with the hardware overview and can be selected and copied.

  2. 2

    Read it off the chassis

MacBook Air and MacBook Pro engrave the serial on the underside of the bottom case, in the small print near the regulatory text. Mac mini and Mac Studio print it on the underside of the enclosure, iMac on the underside of the stand's foot, and Mac Pro on the tower frame.

  3. 3

    Check the box or invoice

The original box carries the serial on its barcode label, and it appears on the Apple invoice or receipt.

  4. 4

    Buying remotely? Ask for both

Ask the seller for a photo of About This Mac and a photo of the serial on the chassis, and check the two match before you pay. A mismatch means the board or the case is not original.

How do I check Apple warranty or AppleCare by serial number?

Warranty status lives with Apple, and its official coverage checker is the only real source. Enter the serial there to see warranty and AppleCare coverage; Macfax adds what Apple doesn't show, like the exact model behind a randomized serial and live asking prices.

Where is the serial number on a Mac?

Apple menu → About This Mac shows it on any booting Mac. It's also engraved or printed on the machine itself, on the box barcode, and on the original invoice.

Where it is on every model

Why can't the model be decoded from a 2021+ serial?

Apple switched to randomized 10-character serials in 2021, so the characters themselves carry no model information: any site claiming to decode them is guessing. Macfax looks the model up by serial instead, which is why it returns the real model where character-decoders can't.

Buying or selling this Mac?

A serial names the model. A Macfax report proves the Mac in front of you is really that machine, in the condition claimed, hardware-signed and verifiable online.
