How to sell a Mac, with proof.

Price it against live asking data, run a free signed report, and list it with the record attached. A few minutes of work, no account, and your listing reads as proof instead of promises.

Step 01

Price it against the live market

Look up what the same configuration is asking right now with the Macfax resale-value tool. An honest ask set against live comps sells faster than a guess, and you will know what a verified report typically adds before you list.

Step 02

Run the free report

Download Macfax, drag the .dmg to Applications, right-click and choose Open. Identity, authenticity, spec-match and hardware-health checks run locally in under a minute. Publish the free Basic report — it carries every measurement we take — or upgrade to Premium so a buyer can re-verify the machine on receipt.

Step 03

List it with the record

Drop the report URL into your listing wherever you sell, then attach the listing in the app. Buyers see the proof before they ask, and a verified listing carries the badge on the Macfax shelf, in front of buyers filtering for proof.

What runs on your Mac

Local. Read-only. No telemetry.

The Macfax app runs locally on the Mac you're selling. It reads system_profiler, ioreg, and SMART data; it does not modify your system, request privacy permissions you haven't already granted, or upload anything beyond the signed payload at publish time.

  • Reads device identifiers (model, serial, chassis serial, logic-board serial)
  • Reads system_profiler output, the drive's own wear counters, and battery cycle count
  • Runs sustained CPU and GPU stress (Premium only) to surface thermal/throttling issues
  • Runs a memory test on idle RAM (Premium only)
  • Stores a per-device key fingerprint in the macOS Keychain
  • Uploads nothing during the in-app preview. The signed payload only goes out at publish time.
Eligibility

Apple Silicon Macs only, for now.

Macfax requires an Apple Silicon Mac running macOS 14 or later. Intel Macs lack the Secure Enclave primitives the diagnostic relies on.

Ready when you are.
