T2 Security Chip

A dedicated security and controller chip Apple shipped in Intel Macs from 2017 to 2020; it provides Secure Boot, encrypted storage, and a Secure Enclave.

The Apple T2 Security Chip is a custom ARM coprocessor that handles Secure Boot, FileVault disk encryption, Touch ID (where applicable), and a Secure Enclave. T2 shipped in Intel-based Macs starting with the 2017 iMac Pro and continued until Apple Silicon replaced Intel in 2020. T2-equipped Macs are the only Intel Macs with Secure Enclave functionality.

For Mac verification, T2 matters because pre-T2 Intel Macs have no hardware root of trust: no Secure Enclave, no Activation Lock binding, no per-device signing key. A 2016 MacBook Pro can be reset and resold without any of the protections Apple builds into modern Macs.

Macfax currently runs only on Apple Silicon Macs (M1 and later) and does not support T2 or earlier hardware. The diagnostic chain Macfax produces relies on Apple Silicon-specific primitives in the Secure Enclave.
